AI revolution in mental health services?

Updated: Jul 1, 2023

Do we need an AI revolution in mental health services? 🤔

Mental health conditions are extremely prevalent.

According to the Mind Charity, 1 in 4 people will experience a mental health problem during their lifetime in the UK. Whereas, 1 in 6 people will experience a mental health problem during any week in England.

Unfortunately, current management of mental health conditions is often inadequate or insufficient, impacted by limited access to mental health services and their funding, persistent taboo around mental health issues as well as intrisic challenges of managing mental health disorders and preventing their relapse.

AI can change that.

But we’re not there yet.

Recent study by the WHO has found that the use of AI in psychiatry is unbalanced, focusing on a selected group of mental health disorders. Challenges associated with designing appropriate AI models, with current flaws in the interpretation and use of data have also been noted.

It is crucial that further research and work in the area is done to evaluate, scale and successfully implement AI models.

Without this, AI will not be able to enhance mental health services delivery and patient outcomes.
